Fine bone china for four - the Canvas dinner plate, side plate and cereal bowl, four of each.

Canvas is clean shapes with no decoration - nothing to compete with what's on the plate. The dinner plate carries a raised rim, which holds gravies, sauces and dressings where they belong - useful for a roast with proper gravy or anything with a sauce worth keeping on the plate.

Bone china has stayed the standard for over two centuries for good reasons: thin and light in the hand, stronger than it looks, and white in a way earthenware never quite manages. It also lets light through - hold a piece up and you'll see it.

The twelve pieces arrive individually packed rather than in one presentation box, and every piece is sold on its own. Which means a breakage costs you a plate, not a set - and a growing table means adding settings, not starting again.

One thing to know: the dinner plate's raised rim means it won't fit in most dishwasher racks, so it's best washed by hand. The side plates and bowls are dishwasher safe.
